Great Neck Cardiologist

Great Neck is an important part of Long Island, comprised of 9 villages and covering five zip codes. One of its villages, Lake Success, was the temporary home of the United Nations from 1947 to 1951. After World War II, a great many Ashkenazi Jews settled the area. Decades later, large numbers of people of East Asian and Persian descent arrived. The diverse population of Great Neck makes it a potpourri of goods and services, foodstuffs, arts and entertainment, and restaurants. Great Neck is known for its excellent schools and luscious parks, one of which, Stepping Stone Park, is on the Long Island Sound, boasting a marina and an outdoor theatre. Great Neck is also renowned as a cultural center and for housing the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. As an active and thriving community, Great Neck needs first-rate healthcare services such as cardiology. Fortunately, it has them.

Cardiology in Great Neck

At Cardiovascular Wellness in the Great Neck Village of Lake Success, we treat each patient with dignity and respect. Though we specialize in diagnosing, treating and preventing medical problems of the cardiovascular system, we recognize that you are more than a heart and blood vessels; you are a human being with feelings and plans.

Dr. Ameeta, the head of our team, is a noted cardiologist with fine credentials and outstanding skills, ready to provide you with clarity as well as compassion. Her patients attest to her commitment to explaining each diagnostic test and type of treatment, understanding that knowledge allays fear and communication promotes trust.

Cardiology Services Offered by Cardiovascular Wellness

Dr. Walia is aware of the fact that some services offered by Cardiovascular Wellness are more time-sensitive than others and makes room for them as they arise. If you are having an urgent surgery, for example, our office will accommodate preoperative clearances the same day.

In addition to preoperative clearances, our services include diagnosing and treating the following cardiovascular conditions.

We will help you understand your particular problem, which may have caused it, and how it can best be treated. Causes vary from one patient to another, but generally speaking high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other malfunctions of the heart and circulatory system may result from poor diet, inactivity, the aging process, smoking and/or being overweight or obese. In some cases, there is also a hereditary component.

It should be noted that spikes in blood pressure may be normal when you are experiencing great physical or emotional stress. An example of physical stress would be over-exertion or severe pain. If blood pressure remains high for an extended period and becomes chronic, however, it is known as hypertension and most often requires treatment not only with lifestyle changes but with medication as well.

We Have Cutting-Edge Diagnostic Equipment

Because we deal with all types of cardiovascular issues, we have a full array of diagnostic equipment available on the premises:

  • Sphygmomanometer
  • Electrocardiogram
  • Stress test
  • Holter monitor

The first tests we will probably do are the simplest ones: a blood pressure test with a sphygmomanometer (blood pressure cuff) and an electrocardiogram (EKG). The EKG will help us detect any electrical abnormalities in your heart. While an EKGs is part of an annual physical exam, we will be using it to begin understanding the cause of symptoms like palpitations, arrhythmia, chest pain or shortness of breath.

It’s important to remember that not all heart patients are symptomatic. You may be sent to us for cardiology because your primary care doctor has detected an irregularity on your  EKG or because you were found to have high blood pressure you were totally unaware of. While it may not seem so, this is a good thing. It’s certainly better to find a cardiovascular problem before you are experiencing symptoms or having a heart attack.

Depending on our findings, we may also administer an echocardiogram or a stress test. The echocardiogram  shows us how your heart is working and whether there has been damage to the heart muscle. The stress test, on the other hand, gives us information concerning your heart’s reaction to stress by examining it while it is pumping quickly either because we have you exercising or because you are injected with a medication that speeds up your heart rate.

If you have been suffering episodes of palpitations or arrhythmia, we will probably have you wear a Holter monitor to record your heart’s activity for a few days or a few weeks so we can observe what happens to your heart at the precise moment you are experiencing symptoms.
